Getaway Guide: LOGE Camps at Westport, Washington

When I first came across LOGE Camps on Instagram, I knew I had to check them out IRL. So when my friend Hannah got an unexpected two shifts off in the middle of my 31st birthday week, I knew exactly where we should go.

LOGE stands for “Live Outside, Go Explore,” and their hotels are designed around just that. LOGE finds forgotten motels in rad towns (Westport, Mt. Shasta, Bend, Leavenworth, and Breckenridge), and brings them back to life with on-brand and outfitted hotel rooms, hostel bunks, campsites, fire pits, live music, on-site gear rentals, and more.

Hannah and I loaded up our respective Toyotas (her: 2000 Sienna, me: 2005 Tacoma) with paddle boards, Yeti coolers, and lots of snacks and pointed it west towards the southern Washington coastline. We went without an agenda, simply knowing that a couple nights away from the “real world” would do our hearts good.

We checked into LOGE and instantly fell in love! Our room was stocked with a Yeti cooler, Miir mugs, and Rumpl blanket for us to use during our stay. The on-site cafe, Sands, was pouring local ciders and brewing oat milk lattes. Traeger grills and lawn games filled the outdoor communal spaces. A garage door opened to reveal surfboards to rent. It was like summer camp, for adults.

Westport is a surfing town, and I wasn’t really feeling being thrashed by waves for my birthday (hello, I was raised and will remain a landlocked child at heart), so we spent our day in Westport exploring the town, reading books on the beach, eating nachos and drinking beer at Blackbeards, and racing the Tacoma through the fog as the sun set on the eve of my 31st birthday.

After Hannah left the next morning, I sat in Sands Cafe sipping a latte and reflecting on the year I was leaving behind, and the one I was stepping into. I mourned for the lives and dreams lost to the pandemic, and vowed to continue to chase my best life in their honor. And so I sat there, in the cafe of a surf town hotel, and bought myself a ski pass – a silly and seemingly insignificant reminder that leaves fall, seasons change, and new possibility blankets the ground. It’s been a messy couple years — but on some level, isn’t it kind of always like that? A little messy, leaving us to still seek the magic?
